COMMON FOOT CONCERN AND
TREATMENT OPTIONS

For all foot ailments the Chiropodist will provide an individual treatment plan.
It is necessary as each patient is unique in their gait, pain level and footwear accommodations.
TOENAIL PATHOLOGIES:
Ingrown, Fungal, Thickened, Involuted toenails

Most people have experienced a sore toe at one time or another. Ingrown toenails can be caused by improper nail cutting techniques, injury, and/or genetics. These patients have the option of having part or all of the toenail removed permanently, or are seen routinely until the area has healed and the patient is comfortable with performing their own foot care.

Thickened and involuted toenails are most commonly present in the elderly, in those who have had an injury to their toenail(s) or those with digital and other structural abnormalities of the foot. They can be uncomfortable and make it difficult to cut the toenail.

Fungal toenails are the most commonly treated toenail condition.  There is no permanent cure for toenail fungus however there are many treatment options to prevent the spread to other toenails, to the skin or to another person.

Nail care is also provided to those who have a medical condition that hinders proper care by themselves such as being unable to reach nails, trouble with vision or arthritis.

CHIROPODIAL TREATMENT
  • Assessing the presenting problem and developing a patient specific treatment plan
  • Prescriptions may be given for topical anti-fungal and/or antibiotics as well as appropriate advice for home foot care regime
  • Education for better management of skin and toenails in the future
  • The Chiropodist can provide Toenail surgery to permanently alleviate a chronic painful ingrown toenail. Partial or Total Toenail Avulsions are performed in the office.
