COMMON FOOT CONCERN AND
TREATMENT OPTIONS

For all foot ailments the Chiropodist will provide an individual treatment plan.
It is necessary as each patient is unique in their gait, pain level and footwear accommodations.
COMPRESSION HOSIERY/DIABETIC SOCKS

Compression Hosiery:
  • Most compression hosiery are graduated compression meaning the higher compression is at the ankles and lessens compression up the legs.
  • Compression hosiery can come in medical grade and over the counter options whereby they are either custom fitted or purchased according to your shoe size.
  • Compression hosiery are also worn for travel via airplanes or on trains whereby the individual is required to sit for extended periods of time.  Wearing compression  hosiery can reduce the risk of leg blood clots in the situation.
  • Most medical sock companies have introduced fashionable comfortable compression hosiery for men and women with patterns, color options and fabric options as well.
  • Some patients have jobs where standing or being on your feet for long periods of time can cause the legs, ankles and feet to swell.  This is a result of blood pooling in the feet, ankles and legs,  as the body has a difficult time returning blood flow from your feet to your heart.  The compression hosiery can reduce leg fatigue, swelling  and re-energize tired achy muscles, reducing the look of spider veins and swollen varicose veins.

Diabetic socks:
  • It is highly recommended that all diabetics wear comfortable moisture wicking socks.  These socks must also include: seamless toe and heel, non-binding calf band, cotton or acrylic blend material to reduce moisture against the foot and preferably white or lighter color.
  • Wearing nylon pantyhose continually can increase the risk of developing fungal infections like athletes foot. Nylon doesn't breath and can cause excessive sweating, an ideal environment for fungus.
  • Like socks, pantyhose should be washed after each use. Also, be sure that compression hosiery, socks and pantyhose are properly fitted around the foot. If there aren't allowing the normal expansion of the foot when walking, they can contribute to cramping, ingrown toenails and hammertoes.
