COMMON FOOT CONCERN AND
TREATMENT OPTIONS

For all foot ailments the Chiropodist will provide an individual treatment plan.
It is necessary as each patient is unique in their gait, pain level and footwear accommodations.

PAEDIATRICS

Unfortunately, infants and children are rarely seen by a Chiropodist. Most pediatric problems are seen after the child has started walking and when visual problems are apparent.
A complete physical examination of the infant or child is completed by the Chiropodist and suggestions can be made regarding the presenting problem. Some commonly treated conditions are: Metatarsus Adductus, Congenital Digitus Minimus Varus, and Curly Toes and In toeing. Talipes Equino Varus (Club Foot) is now treated minutes after birth.
As Chiropodists, we would most likely see the child at an older, walking age to treat any existing problems not corrected by surgery. Suggestions towards footwear alterations and orthotic management are made as well as educating the parents on the function of the treatment regimes. Other common foot ailments in children include plantar warts and ingrown toenails.

CHIROPODIAL TREATMENT
  • Educate the parents on the presenting problem to rule out any concerns that they may have (some conditions resolve themselves as the child grows older but monitoring the condition in necessary)
  • Only conservative methods of treatments such as manipulations, castings and mechanical devices are used to resolve or control the state of the condition
  • Possible use of over the counter insoles or custom orthotics
  • Referral to physiotherapists for manipulation or exercises may be suggested
