COMMON FOOT CONCERN AND
​TREATMENT OPTIONS

For all foot ailments the Chiropodist will provide an individual treatment plan.
It is necessary as each patient is unique in their gait, pain level and footwear accommodations.

CUSTOM ORTHOTICS  

Chiropodist have extensive training and experience in dealing with biomechanics of the foot and ankle and in selecting the appropriate custom orthotic and proper footwear to wear them in.  Chiropodists and podiatrists are the only regulated health professionals in Ontario whose legislated scope of practice includes the provision of orthotics. 

Custom orthotics are a prescription device that are designed to improve the mechanics of your feet, manage painful foot pathologies  and to improve provide control of the foot motions and eliminate the stress on the joints, muscles and tendons and ligaments and support your overall posture. 

To make custom orthotics,  a plaster of paris subtalar neutral cast or a three dimensional impression is completed to make molds of the feet.  A biomechanical examination, stance and gait analysis, obtaining the patient’s medical history, footwear habits, patients activities, and work environment are factors needed so the Chiropodist is able to prescribe a proper custom orthotic using a variety of materials, styles, shapes and corrections.  The plaster of paris subtalar neutral cast of the feet or  three dimensional impression mold that was made accompanies the orthotic prescription and using a variety of materials, styles, shapes and corrections a custom orthotic is manufactured for the individual.  Once the prescribed custom orthotics are made, they are fitted to the patient's foot and the patient is educated on their proper use to maximize their effectiveness.
